James Fisher Marine Services’* diving equipment division designed, manufactured and installed a bespoke, temporary twin basket diver deployment system on a floating production storage and offloading vessel (FPSO).
The diver Launch and Recovery System (LARS) was designed and built in accordance with IMCA D023, Lloyd’s Register ‘Code for Lifting Appliances in a Marine Environment’ and ATEX Zone 2 compliance due to the location of the installation.

The challenge
- In order to adapt to limited access, JF Subtech had to ensure that the LARS could to be mounted to an existing gantry structure located on the collar deck of the turret.
- Installation had to be completed with minimal operational downtime while maintaining complete operational reassurance.
The solution
- JF Subtech mounted the LARS to the gantry structure of the asset using a deployment frame, which was designed and manufactured as a modular solution to enable flexibility during installation and removal.
- To mitigate operational downtime, JF Subtech designed the LARS to include two separate dive baskets. Each of these included its own:
- Clump weights
- Winches
- Hydraulic hoses
- Hydraulic power unit (HPU)
- Joystick control systems
- The systems were designed with their own internal back-ups, and each HPU possessed two sets of components. They shared only their frames, control panel and system integration points, making the system fully redundant and providing efficiency as well as complete operational reassurance.

- The project was completed on time and within budget while delivering upon the customer’s specific requirements, with recognition provided to the professionalism demonstrated by the team.
